You almost can't go to the movies anymore without a superhero or comic book movie playing in one of the theaters, and this has led to a feeling known as superhero movie fatigue. Some feel it more than others, and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice star Henry Cavill addressed this feeling in a recent interview.
"I think it's anything which is prevalent and on top people are going to complain about," he said in the video interview below. "At the moment, the superhero genre is the most prevalent genre out there despite the fact that the spy genre is so strong this year. That's just the nature of it. It's one of those decade long genres, the superhero thing, which is going to keep on going and people will complain about it all the time, of course. The secondary genre each year will change, and this year it just so happened to be spy."
The British actor makes a good point. We've had some excellent spy films in the last year with Kingsman: The Secret Service, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, and Cavill's own The Man From U.N.C.L.E.
So yes, while superhero movies are flooding the market, there are still numerous other options out there for those who are sick of seeing costumed characters flying around and saving people, or who have become fatigued by the countless destruction of cities or "end of the world" plots that have permeated comic book movies.
Plus, superhero movies are successful, so studios likely don't have any plans to stop the gravy train anytime soon. And even Hollywood writers are questioning the place of original movies in this landscape. American Ultra screenwriter Max Landis tweeted multiple times earlier this week and questioned if original ideas even have a chance anymore after the movie finished in sixth place at the box office.
