So, this is a total shocker: a man in California was recently bitten by a rattlesnake while he was trying to take a selfie with the snake wrapped around his neck. And now, because of his oh-so-intelligent actions, he might lose either his thumb or his hand.

Alex Gomez reportedly discovered a four-foot-long rattlesnake near his home last week. And while most people would run in fear, especially as the rattling becomes quicker and louder as you approach the reptile, Gomez, on the other hand, apparently decided to pick it up and wrap it around his neck.

Which, if you didn't realize, makes perfect sense. (No, it doesn't...)

While arguably the dumbest thing a human has ever done, there's a touch of impressiveness here in that he was actually able to snap a photo. Unfortunately, when he tried moving the snake, well, that's when the bite went down.

Per a report from KTLA 5, the 36-year-old said, "I was going to take it off my neck and do something else with it, but it turned sideways and it sunk its tooth into ... my hand." Immediately afterwards, Gomez headed on over to a neighbor's place to call 911.

No word on whether or not audio on the 911 call has the dispatcher laughing or not.

Of course, we're just assuming there was laughter on the other end. You know, once they heard a guy got bit because he put a rattlesnake around his head to try and take a selfie.

Additionally, Gomez's mother apparently told reporters that she was terrified and thought her son was a "fool" for doing what he did. Which, yeah, we get.

Though maybe Gomez said it best. "Don't mess with snakes. Just leave them alone."

Sadly he had to get bit to learn that.

So, to reiterate: some guy decided to wrap a rattlesnake around his neck and take a selfie. Because of that, he got bit. Thoughts?
