It's being reported that an Egyptian court has sentenced three journalists from Al Jazeera TV to three years in prison for "operating without a press license and broadcasting material harmful to Egypt," per a report from The Huffington Post. One of the journalists, Mohamed Fahmy, who was found guilty last year in the case, and found guilty yet again in this recent retrial, is being represented by George Clooney's wife, international lawyer Amal Clooney.
Those sentenced also included Baher Mohamed and Peter Greste.
CBC News claims that the three-year sentence is less than the initial seven that Fahmy had received during last year's trial.
The arrests were apparently in part of an attempt to crack down on free speech in Egypt since President Mohamad Mursi was overthrown by the army.
On the sentence, Greste claimed that words "don't do justice." He further called the sentencing "outrageous" and "devastating."
Among the three, Baher was given an extra six months in prison because he reportedly had a bullet on him during the time of his arrest.
Clooney spoke against the sentence, saying, "We will appeal this verdict and hope it will be reversed. We are now going to be holding a series of meetings with government officials where we will be asking for Mr. Fahmy's immediate deportation to Candada." Fahmy is, of course, a "naturalized Canadian" who gave up his citizenship in Egypt.
The journalists' lawyer further explained that Greste was sent back to Australia, and there should be no reason to not do the same for Fahmy.
Many, largely western cultures, have found the arrests concerning, calling it an incorrect way to spread democracy throughout the country.
Canadian officials have since called for Fahmy's "full and immediate release" and are further pressing authorities in Egypt to send their citizen back home.
