Scott Baier used his executive knowhow in an agreement with his daughter, Rachel, when she decided to quit Facebook for 5 months and asked for $200 in compensation for the decision. The father drafted a contract for his daughter's decision and posted it on his blog. Baier, the vice president for sustainability and research at Boston-based Groom Energy Solutions, uses his website to " discuss the practical challenges faced by corporations managing and reducing their energy and GHG emissions." It is also his personal blog, so this post about the contract between him and Rachel was not out of place.

Rachel approached her father with her Facebook dilemma. The 14-year-old honors student recognized how much of a distraction the social network can be and decided on a 5-month hiatus from the site on her own. She would rather spend her time working on schoolwork and socializing in the real world. Her father was very pleased with his daughter's decision and added to her incentive to stay clear of the site with the $200 "bribe." Baier, a Harvard University School of Business graduate, presented his daughter with the contract that outlined the stipulations of their agreement. The contract states that Rachel will be paid $50 in April and then the final $150 in June when the school year is over.

Though it may not seem like it, Facebook and other social media hiatuses are very common. Recently, a Pew Internet and American Life study came out stating that around 61percent of Facebook users had quit the site for several weeks at a time on at least one occasion. In the majority of the cases, though, the users do not make this a permanent departure and return to the social media site. According to Rachel Baier, she plans to follow that model. But the point of her deactivation is for her to focus on school. Once school is over, the incentive has past and there is clearly no reason for her to stay away from the site. Plus, when she does sign back in, she will be $200 wealthier.

Until then, her account password is in her father's possession so he can change her current password and deactivate the account. This way, Rachel cannot sneak online and break the contract. Though I am sure she would never do such a thing.

Scott Baier has said of his daughter's decision to leave the popular website:

"This is two years of 24/7 teen discussion of friends, clothes, parties, etc. They can't get away from it. I'm proud she recognized the benefit of a hiatus. She plans to go on using it after the contract end."
