Diehard Duke basketball fans (students deemed the "Cameron Crazies") are in hot water after alegedly chanting "How's your Grandma?" at North Carolina State freshman Tyler Lewis during Thursday evening's fierce battle on the court in Durham. Lewis, a starting guard for the Wolfpack, lost his 83-year-old grandmother just last week due to complications from pneumonia. The relentless Duke fans allegedly heckled Lewis with other insulting chants including "Bilbo Baggins" and "Past your bedtime!" Although representatives for Duke basketball insist that students of the Cameron Crazies never collectively mocked Lewis' deceased grandmother during the game, the "Duke Grandma chant" has since gone viral on the web, sparking disgust and disappointment on Twitter.

According to eye-witnesses at the game, Lewis was shooting free throws at the beginning of the second half when several Cameron Crazies began chanting "How's your Grandma?" A N.C. State sports reporter, a fellow Wolfpack player, and Lewis' father Rick all heard the inconsiderate taunts.

"It was mostly 'Past your bedtime,' but there was an instant when a brief number of students chanted about Tyler's grandmother," Rick Lewis, who was sitting behind the N.C. State bench, told the News & Observer. "It wasn't the entire student section. I think a few tried to outdo themselves."

Lewis' grandmother recently passed away on Friday, Feb. 1.

N.C. State forward Richard Howell later tweeted:

@Rich1Howell: "He lost his grandma and y'all chant that? Cowards."

Nolan Evans, an editor at the N.C. State student newspaper who attended the game, also tweeted:

@RealNolanEvans: "I was sitting on press row toward the Duke entrance. No reason to demonize the student section, guys. Handful of dumb college kids."

Duke students insist that they were only chanting "Past your bedtime," not "How's your Grandma."

Duke basketball spokesman Matt Plizga recently released this statement to the Daily News:

"We have looked into the stories that are circulating on the internet, talked to dozens of people who were at the game, and no one we've talked to, including several of the 50+ journalists who were sitting in front of the student section, heard the alleged chant. What has become clear is that there was no organized chant by the Cameron Crazies referencing Tyler Lewis' grandmother, nor was there any reference to his grandmother's recent passing on the standard cheer sheets that are distributed among the students prior to each game."

Although the chanting is hard to decipher, and several Duke fans at the game insist that no such Grandma taunt was ever uttered, several Twitter fans are not pleased with Blue Devils fans:

@mmadisonn02: "never respected duke fans and now I especially don't! how could you chant 'how's your grandma' to a player who just lost his.. #awful."

@AKforPresident: "Really? Lewis' grandma dies last Friday and you chant 'How's your grandma Way to be Duke fans."

@m_vernon4: "How is Duke gunna chant about someone's grandmawho recently passed away? Get out."

@HunterMorgan21: "Dang Duke...That was a little far, quite embarrassed you would chant 'how's your grandma' after she passed away a week ago. Too far."

@ygray_ncsu18: "WOW so you Duke f#gs chant 'How's your grandma' to Tyler Lewis? F##k all of you for that. Karma is gonna bite you in the a##. All of you."

@cjack67: "Duke fans are stuck up assholes. How are you going to chant at a player about his grandma dying??? That is really messed up."

@DCElliott1996: "To be honest I'm ashamed to be a Duke fan right now after the 'how's your grandma' chant. #embarrassed #alltimelow #comeonguys."

Lewis's father later told the Observer, "It's time to move one, in my opinion. No need to make it more than a few immature comments by a few select fans."

So what do Mstarz readers think, did members of the Cameron Crazies really go so far as to cheer "How's you Grandma" at the mourning Lewis?

Duke ended up winning the game 98-85.
