According to a recent NBC News report, a real-life vampire living in Turkey was arrested due to his morbid addiction to drinking blood. The 23-year-old married man with multiple personalities was arrested after biting and stabbing innocent individuals in order to collect and drink their blood once the addiction became as "important as breathing." According to a recent case study published in the Journal of Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics, doctors discovered several traumatic events in the man's life leading up to his two-year bloodsucking binge.

The report claims that the young Turkish man, whose name and hometown were not released, began slicing his own arms, chest, and belly with razor blades to satisfy his vampire-like appetites. Soon the compulsion to drink blood became as "urgent as breathing," and the man turned to other, more horrific blood sources.

The young man was arrested several times after "stabbing and biting" others for blood, explains NBC News. His father would even collect bags of the human substance from blood banks in order to appease his son. That's when the real-life vampire turned to doctors for help.

The recently published case study claims that doctors found traumatic events in the man's life that led up to his two-year bloodsucking phase. Researchers write - "His 4-month-old daughter became ill and died, he witnessed the murder of his uncle, and he saw another violent killing in which 'one of his friends cut off the victim's head and penis.'" This is also when the man started developing multiple personalities.

NBC News states, "The man had been seen talking to himself, and he claimed to be tormented by an 'imaginary companion' who forced him to carry out violent acts and attempt suicide. He also had memory gaps in his daily life and reported instances of being in a new place without any idea of how he got there."

The report also reveals - "Possibly due to 'switching' to another personality state, he was losing track during the 'bloody' events, did not care who the victim was anymore and remained amnesic to this part of his act."

The Turkish doctors, led by Denizli Military Hospital's Direnc Sakarya, finally diagnosed the real-life vampire with dissociative identity disorder (DID), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), chronic depression, and alcohol abuse. As far as the doctors know, this man is the first patient with "vampirism" as well as DID.

The Vampire case study explains that DID is typically associated with childhood abuse and neglect. The man's mother allegedly had "freak out" episodes during his adolescence where she would violently attack him - the man apparently can't remember his childhood from the ages of 5-11.

Doctors followed up on the man's condition six-weeks after treatment, and the real-life vampire's blood-drinking habits were currently in remission (although his dissociative symptoms continued). The young man allegedly insists that the "drugs were merely sleeping pills, they would not cure him."

NBC News points out that the human body isn't well-adapted to drinking large amounts of blood. Individuals who make it a regular part of their diet run the risk of haemochromatosis (iron overdose) and contracting blood-borne diseases.

Although the real-life vampire is in no sense a true "mythical" vampire like Dracula, his addiction to blood makes him a rather scary close comparison.
