Rowan Blanchard, star of Girl Meets World, penned an eye-opening letter on her website, defending Amandla Stenberg, and the portrayal of women of color. The young Disney actress titled the open essay as “A figment of my imagination,” which was actually answering a fans question, who pondered her thoughts on “white feminism,” and how feminism can exclude women of color. The topic has definitely become the center of controversy, but more on the surface, within the country over the last year, as the #BlackLivesMatter movement has grown.
Blanchard started off her answer by stating that the subject was “such as important thing to be discussing, and even mentioned that “educating myself and discussing these topics have really helped.”
The Girl Meets World actress then dove into the topic discussing police brutality against both women of color, such as Sandra Bland, as well as transgender individuals. People also seem to forget that black women are victims of police violence too- from Sandra Bland to India Clarke- a trans woman who was beaten to death in Florida just a month ago,” she penned.
She then moved onto defend Hunger Games star, Amandla Stenberg, who has made headlines in the past few months for her knowledge and speaking out on cultural appropriation with white women, especially in Hollywood:
“The fact that when Amandla Stenberg wrote this beautiful and truthful piece https://instagram.com/p/5D-u1Vm1c8/ she was automatically labeled the 'angry black girl' says enough. We are so quick to applaud white women for commenting on race issues/discussions like #BlackLivesMatter, and #SayHerName, but when a black girl comments on it- she is told she is overreacting or being angry,” she wrote.
bigger than you or me. discussions are healthy. ignorance is not. words by me

Stenberg came under fire for speaking upon it heavily in a comment on Kylie Jenner’s Instagram photo, where the reality starlet was rocking a cornrow braids hairstyle. Both of these women are displaying that they are well aware of their surroundings, and can definitely be seen as role models for younger women.
