Michael Vick, who was set to make around $16 million next season, has recently agreed to a restructured agreement with the Philadelphia Eagles, resulting in him making "up to" $10 million instead. Vick now has a 3-year contract with the Eagles and will be competing with newcomer Nick Foles for the first string quarterback position. Inconsistency and injury last season put Vick in this spot and allowed Foles to gain prowess.
Vick ended the season with 2,362 yards passing, 10 interceptions and 12 touchdowns last season. The Philadelphia Eagles finished in last place in the NFC East with a record of 4 - 12. Former head coach Andy Reid was fired the day after the 2012 season ended, making way for new head couch Chip Kelly. Keeping Vick on the team came as a decision from the new coach, but Kelly has made it clear that the 32-year-old quarterback needs to prove his worth. Kelly said:
"I'm going to look at everybody. If you can throw the ball and run, I'm going to take you out there. We're going to look at everything we can do to put the best product on the field and that's what it's all about. I've followed Michael's career and I understand what a talent he is. But there is nothing that's on the board right now, there's nothing that's off the board right now. Our sole focus and goal is that we're going to put an offense on the field that's going to score points. That's basically what we're going to do and whoever that is, I don't know that. There's nobody ruled in, there's nobody ruled out.''
In 2009 the Philadelphia signed Vick leading to him becoming the starting quarterback in 2010. That season he lead the Eagles to an NFC East title. Vick will be 33 years old when the new season begins and can still be quite effective if he stays healthy. With Chip Kelly bringing an up-tempo, forceful offense from Oregon to Philadelphia, Vick can fit in quite well.
Nick Foles played 6 games and ended last season with an injury. With Kelly and Vick coming to a reduced agreement for the new season, it is hard to say what will happen to Foles. It looks like Kelly preferred what he saw from Vick, despite his reported inconsistency, as opposed to Foles. Only time will tell as we look forward to the off-season.
