Penelope Cruz was gushing about her second pregnancy with Javier Bardem this week, thus confirming rumors of another child on the way earlier this month. Reports of a pregnant Cruz began to circulate a few weeks ago when sources broke the news, but without confirmation from the Spanish actors. Thanks to an intimate interview with Spanish television station, TVE, Cruz decided it was time for her to speak openly about her pregnancy. She is "tremendously happy and excited" for her new child but will have to miss the Goya Awards in Madrid. This will be the couples' second child together and the younger sibling to their 2-year-old son, Leo.
The 38-year-old Cruz and 43-year-old Bardem started dating in 2007 after working together on the Wood Allen film Vicky Christina Barcelona. They married in 2010 in the Bahamas. Their son, Leonardo Encinas Cruz (in keeping with Spanish tradition) was born in January 2011. Cruz has described motherhood as:
"a revolutionary experience. That's the best way I can describe it . . . when you see that face, you are transformed forever.
The news of Cruz's second pregnancy comes right after her sister, Monica Cruz, announced her own pregnancy in January. Cruz and Bardem have always kept out of the prying eyes of the media, leading very private lives at home with busy filming schedules mixed in.
Both Spanish actors have reached worldwide fame over the last decade or so, making them household Hollywood names despite their nationality. Penelope Cruz got her Hollywood break with the films Vanilla Sky and Blow, acting opposite megastars Tom Cruise and Johnny Depp respectively. In 2006, she became the first Spanish actress ever to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in Volver. From there, more nominations and awards piled up for Cruz. Javier Bardem never refers to his job as "acting," but instead calls it "working." He has been working hard for a very long time. Bardem's biggest break came in the role of Anton Chigurh, a sociopathic assassin in the Coen brothers' film No Country For Old Men. He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and was the first Spanish actor to accomplish this feat. Bardem was also the most recent James Bond villain in 2012's Skyfall.
So congratulations to the amazingly talented and attractive couple. You both seem like really genuine people who just love life. We are sure that your new baby will fill your lives with even more greatness.
