Reports confirm that a pregnant 16-year-old teenager from Texas is currently suing her parents in an attempt to prevent them from forcing her to get an abortion. The unnamed teen was allegedly assaulted by family members who want her to abort the baby, although she claims her and her boyfriend are prepared to take care of the child. According to the lawsuit, the young mom-to-be was also threatened and punished by her parents, in an attempt to pressure her into aborting the nine-week pregnancy. Until a court decision is reached, a temporary restraining order was recently issued.
The pregnant teen's lawyers from the pro-life Texas Center for Defense of Life recently filed the lawsuit in a Houston, TX court. According to the claim, the young girl was physically assaulted by family members when told that she wanted to keep the baby. The teen's parents also allegedly forced her to get two jobs and quite school when she refused to abort. They took away her cell phone and car to "make her miserable so that she would give in to the coercion and have the abortion," according to the lawsuit. At one point, the pregnant minor (referred to as R.E.K.) claims that her mother "invited the paternal grandparents to a bar for further discussion, where she suggested that she might slip her an abortion pill through deception." The lawsuit states that her father forcefully told her "he was going to take her to have an abortion and that the decision was his, end of story."
The teen is also seeking a temporary restraining order against her father throughout the remainder of her pregnancy.
According to representatives at the Texas Center for Defense for Life, the young teen has the personal choice whether she wants to abort or keep the child:
"She is legally protected, they cannot drag her to get an abortion, force an abortion on our client," the girl's attorney Stephen Casey told KPRC.
According to Casey, several text messages sent to the young teen by her father support her claims. Her father heatedly denies this, and insists that someone put her up to the lawsuit. According to the lawsuit, the girl's mother wants her to abort because "the two minor parents had no idea what it would do to their lives."
The family is due back in court on Friday (Feb. 15). Until then, a temporary restraining order was issued. The teen currently resides with her paternal grandparents, who have agreed to help care for the baby.
Casey goes on to explain, "What [Roe versus Wade] established is minors have the choice. And when they do make the choice folks are shocked that they want to carry the baby."
Under Roe vs. Wade a woman has the right to choose whether she wants an abortion or not.
Under Bellotti vs. Baird a teenager has the right to make her own decisions over her reproductive health.
