Fans can hardly wait for the Season 4 premiere of Arrow, which will air on Wednesday, October 7 at 8 p.m. Eastern. And in a new interview, executive producer Marc Guggenheim drops some new spoilers and details about the season's Big Bad, the villain Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough).
In the first three seasons of the series, we had villains who justified their actions with twisted morality. The Dark Archer/Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman) wanted to cleanse Starling City by destroying the Glades. Slade Wilson/Deathstroke (Manu Bennett) wanted to avenge the death of his beloved Shado, which he blamed on Oliver. And Ra's al Ghul (Matt Nable) believed he was replacing evil with death.
But Guggenheim told Entertainment Weekly that Damien Darhk is a different kind of beast.
“Unlike previous big bads, who were doing the wrong thing for the right reasons, there’s nothing nearly as redeeming or redemptive in Damien Darhk,” he said. “He’s really pure evil, and he will stop at nothing to achieve his ends.”
“We’re gonna learn that this villain has been operating in town for the past three months,” he added. “Team Arrow has basically been trying to keep [him] at bay, but then something happens in the season premiere that’s the straw that breaks the camel’s back and it prompts Laurel [Katie Cassidy] and Thea [Willa Holland] to go find Oliver and get him to return.”
The Season 3 finale of Arrow referenced Damien Darhk, as Oliver tried to capture him in order to draw out Ra's al Ghul. So it's interesting that Darhk has apparently been working to bring down Star City pretty much since that episode.
As you can see in the Season 4 trailer below, Thea and Laurel crash Oliver and Felicity's scene of domestic happiness just as Oliver is, seemingly, about to propose to his love. And, as we know, they succeed in pulling him back to Star City.
When he does return home, he will encounter his old friend John Diggle (David Ramsey), now suited up and patrolling the streets of Star City. The relationship between the two will be frosty, but Diggle is apparently ready to roll when it comes to taking on Damien Darhk and H.I.V.E., the organization that killed his brother.
“It’s something that will drive Diggle in the first half of the year,” Guggenheim said. “It’s very tied into what’s going on between him and Oliver.”
