Baby, a 10-year-old pit bull, saved Rhonda and her sister Evelyn Westenberger after their house caught on fire Tuesday morning in Lincoln County, Oklahoma, and then she went back into the burning building to save the 5 other dogs that resided there. Fortunately for the Westerberger sisters, Baby does not show her age and leaped into action, waking the women from sleep with just a few seconds left for them to escape. The family’s home and belongings may have burned up in the fire, but they are all very grateful to their loyal hero, Baby.
As Rhonda and Evelyn slept, a fire engulfed the house in flames after a malfunction with the dryer. Baby refused to allow her owners to continue their slumber as she barked, nudged, and pounced in order to wake them and get them away from danger. The women escaped but they had 5 other dogs that remained trapped in the burning house. Fortunately for them, Baby was not ready to lose anyone in the flames, so she went back in. One pup was so scared that it took refuge under one of the beds, refusing to budge. Baby found this terrified canine and grabbed it by the neck in order to drag it to safety.
One of the sisters saved by Baby, Evelyn Westenberger, suffered congestive heart failure and was hospitalized after the fire. Recovering in her hospital bed, she is in high spirits after Baby saved her life. Chris Land, a family member who was not present during the fire, shared his love for his dog with the following statement:
"[Baby has] always come across to us as one of the family and this just proves it."
Rhonda Westenberger summed up the whole situation with tears in her eyes, saying:
"There were flames shooting down the hallway. If Baby hadn't woken Evelyn up, I don't think either one of us would have come out of it. It brings my spirit up a lot to see the dogs. I'm so proud of her. She is my hero. She's the hero for all of us."
Pit bulls often garner a lot of negative connotations and generally scare people who do not know better. Hopefully with a story like this one, that terrible stereotype can be put to rest. Baby is the hero of this remarkable story but she could also be the start of a positive view in regards to pit bulls.
