11-year-old cancer survivor Ireland Lane mysteriously caught fire in her room at Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Portland, Oregon, and is now recovering from third-degree burns. She was originally brought to the hospital for a head injury but sustained then the strange fire added to her stay. Lane had been painting in her room and then ran into the hallway screaming because her t-shirt had suddenly caught fire.

Dr. Stacy Nicholson, physician-in-chief at the Oregon hospital told KATU, "I've been in medicine going back 30 years now and never heard anything like this. And hopefully I never will again." Also, in a statement to ABCNews.com, Nicholson elaborated by saying, "Our safety experts are working closely with the Oregon State Fire Marshal's office on its investigation. We anxiously await the their findings and will certainly make adjustments if the cause was preventable."

Though hospital staff members immediately extinguished the flames, the cause of the fire was and still remains a mystery. Ireland reportedly used hand sanitizer to clean her bed table used for painting a gift for her nurse. Right now, the mixture of static electricity and the alcohol-based sanitizer are being investigated as the cause of the fire according to the Oregon State Fire Marshal. Ireland Lane was originally brought in to the hospital for a head injury and was due to leave February 2, the day of the mysterious fire. Sadly, she is now undergoing care for third-degree burns on her arms, neck, earlobes and chest at the Legacy Oregon Burn Center. Currently she is listed in serious condition and will undergo a second skin graft on Thursday, which is her 12th birthday.

Ireland's father, Stephen Lane, was asleep in the hospital room when the flames erupted and frantically followed his daughter into the hallway for help. He says that his daughter "still has bad dreams," but does not remember the fire. He released the following statement to the Oregonian:

"She's quite a tough one. She's been through more than any child I've ever heard of, and to still walk around with a smile on her face and enjoy the things of the day that are going on, and be a kid is to me pretty amazing. I can handle all of it - I'm a dad and I'm supposed to. But I hate seeing her unhappy stuck in a hospital again."

Ireland is a cancer survivor and has spent a lot of time in the hospital. Hopefully with her upcoming procedure, she will be able to leave and enjoy her birthday.
