Joe Biden's advice for citizens worried about becoming targets to criminals is to use a shotgun instead of a semi-automatic rifle. The Vice President was answering questions during an online Facebook town hall meeting hosted by Parents Magazine, when he was posed a question about assault weapons being banned and how it would affect "law-abiding citizens." Biden responded with the following answer:

"Get a double-barrel shotgun. Have the shells ready. And I promise you...as I told my wife...we live in an area that's in the woods and somewhat secluded. I said, 'Jill, if there's ever a problem, just walk out on the balcony , walk out and take that double-barrel shotgun and fire two blasts outside the house. I promise you whoever is coming in...You don't need an AR-15. It's harder to aim, it's harder to use and in fact, you don't need 30 rounds to protect yourself. Buy a shotgun, buy a shotgun."

Clearly this advice is a little out of left field, but can't the same be said about our Vice President? Gun control advocates are not happy that Biden did not attempt to push the administration's gun policies. Plus, people in support of gun-rights have accused Biden of offering an uninformed choice. Joe Biden has never hidden the fact that he owns guns. His point in this strange remark was that the assault rifles that his administration is trying to ban are not the only gun that can be used for security. In fact, why would an automatic rifle be the "go to" for home security? Also, the Vice President was simply trying to tell a homey story about how his wife can protect herself. One simple shot from a shotgun can scare off a home invader, therefore providing enough security without any casualties. That seems like the point he was going for. Unfortunately, he just comes off as a little off base and worrisome.

In fact, if one were to fire a shotgun in order to scare off a criminal, after only two shots the gun would be useless. Sure it is a loud and scary weapon, but it is impractical is this suspected criminal were to simply count the shots and then advance on the victim. Maybe if the shotgun owner could reload the gun in time the threat would be taken care of, but just simply trying to scare off the culprit is not enough in most cases.
