The 85th annual Academy Awards are just a few days away, so how about instead of focusing on who will bring who or who will wear what, we partake in a short history lesson? The Oscars are, of course, are about celebrating the last year's achievements in film. With the following Retrospective video below (edited by Nelson Carvajal) you get to see each and every 'Best Picture' victor in short clips leading all the way up to the most recent winner, The Artist. Also included are clips of this year's nominees: Amour, Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Django Unchained, Les Misérables, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook, and Zero Dark Thirty.
The first Academy Award for 'Best Picture' went to the film Wings in 1927, though technically it won the 'Outstanding Picture' award but the category has changed since then to what we call it today. Clearly there will be some films that you do not recognize, especially towards to beginning, but once you get past the 1940s the actors and the scenes start to look familiar. Once you see that iconic scene from 1939's winner, Gone With the Wind, you might start to feel a little more like a film buff. But that this opportunity to find out the other winners in this rich history of film prestige. Get to know about films like Rebecca, On the Waterfront, or Oliver! Or learn about all of the films. Yes it is like a history lesson, but with this Retrospective video it is an easy tutorial that is just over 4 minutes long. So sit back, maybe grab a snack, and enjoy this short project that really exemplifies just how special and prestigious the 'Best Picture' category is.

As you can see, this video closes with this year's nominees, asking the simple question, "Next?" So who do you think is next? Looking at the list of nominated films, it is definitely a hard choice. Each of the eight films has a good chance of taking home the statue. Personally I have only seen one of the eight, so maybe I would have to base my choice on reviews and such. I have heard amazing things about Beasts of the Southern Wild and Amour. At the 2013 Golden Globes Argo and Les Miserables won the 'Best Picture' categories in Drama and Musical or Comedy respectively, so maybe that puts them ahead of the others. Each film has something different to offer and each film deserves recognition. Who will end up on next year's Retrospective? Tune in Sunday night to find out.
