A woman may be joining the NFL. Lauren Silberman has become the first woman to be invited to an NFL tryout as a potential kicker. The 28-year-old New Yorker will be attending the NFL regional scouting combine.
The combine is strictly for the athletes who were not invited to the main combine that is held in Indianapolis next week. Instead the kicking prospect will attend the scouting combine with other college players in New Jersey for the first round and if placed amongst the best she will head to the super-regional held in April in Dallas.
Lauren Silberman will attend the combine knowing that her chances are slim, but is honored and hope that more women will also follow her lead, "I was not aware that I was the first female registrant," Silberman said according to NFL.com. Silberman hasn't officially kicked a football, but has played club soccer for University of Wisconsin.
The female kicker added, "I was actually hoping that the 2012 historical milestone rule, to allow women to play, would prompt more women to attend tryouts this year. But for me, what's important is to finally have a chance to fulfill my dreams by trying out to play in the world's most competitive football league."
If accepted to the NFL, Silberman will be the first female NFL athlete, "The opportunity to attend this event could not be more exciting," Lauren Silberman said. "Getting to meet interesting people and perfect my technique from others could not be more rewarding ... Regardless of the outcome of the tryout, I hope there is a way I can contribute and strengthen the league."
