Have you seen someone walking around wearing Google Glass? Probably not, but if Google has anything to say about it, the futuristic internet-connected glasses will be worn by many once Glass becomes a bit more stylish. For that challenge, it seems Google is asking designer Warby Parker for help.
Interest in Google Glass is growing and Google is reportedly looking to try to expand on its appeal by making the glasses look more stylish. Google Glass contains a lens-less frame with a USB connector-size augmented reality head-mounted display. Although cutting edge, it looks awkward, which is why according to The New York Times, Google is in talks with eye wear designer Warby Parker to design frames that are more stylish for future consumers.
On Wednesday, Google also launched a contest on its Glass website allowing the average Joe to try out Google Glass. Google is taking applications until February 27, but it seems to be a pricey affair. According to the website, "Explorers will each need to pre-order a Glass Explorer Edition for $1,500 plus tax and attend a special pick-up experience, in person, in New York, San Francisco or Los Angeles."
I think I will wait for the Black Friday sale. Obviously price will be a big obstacle for potential consumers. Forget the fact that the glasses aren't very fashionable, who can afford these high-tech glasses? It will take time for Google to figure out a style it's comfortable with and it seems like it may also take some time for Google to get the price within an affordable range.
There will always be the consumers who camp outside a store for days before a product goes on sale, and they may be willing to pay big bucks for Google Glass, but the majority of Americans don't have thousands of dollars to spare for such a high-tech gadget.
With that said, once you watch the video below showing what you can do with Google Glass, it does seem very cool. Maybe if you we start saving up now we can afford it in time for the holidays.
By the looks of it, if you are lucky enough to get a Glass, you will be able to take some pretty cool photos of that next Justin Bieber concert. The future is here and it's Google Glass.
What do you guys think? Is Google Glass cool or a little too geeky for you?
