A recent media campaign from the Respect of Marriage Coalition shows clips of Laura Bush, Colin Powell and Dick Chaney supporting same-sex marriage, leading to the former first lady insists the removal of her image and name from the ad. The clip of Bush used in the campaign is from a 2010 interview with Larry King where she said, "When couples are committed they ought to have, I think, the same rights that everyone has." Clearly a great quote for such a cause, but unfortunately it was used without her permission. The point of this campaign is to show how powerful republicans support gay marriage and that it is not a partisan issue.

Quotes from former Secretary of State Colin Powell and former Vice President Dick Cheney are also included and make a powerful stance for the Respect of Marriage Coalition's message. Powell says, "Allowing them to live together, under the protection of the law...it seems to me that this is the way that we should be moving in this country." Cheney is shown saying the simple line, "Freedom means freedom for everyone." These are such powerful statements from such powerful people. So why is Mrs. Bush angry at her use in this campaign even though it shows something she literally said?

Bush spokeswoman Anne MacDonald stated that Laura Bush "did not approve of her inclusion in this advertisement nor is she associated with the group that made the ad in any way. When she became aware of the advertisement last night, we requested that the group remove her from it." So even though the quote reflects Mrs. Bush's views correctly, the fact that the ad uses a nationally broadcasted clip of her with her permission is the only reason she asked to be removed from it. Apparently.

There have been no reports on whether or not Colin Powell or Dick Cheney has any thoughts on this campaign let alone wanting to be removed from the ad. Dick Cheney's recently had a same-sex marriage and the former Vice President has shown his support saying that he is proud of her.

So what is to come of this campaign? The main point of this ad was to show how people like Laura Bush support gay marriage and then to have her ask to be removed from it is pretty much disproving that point. The video ends with a clip of President Barack Obama saying, "our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law."
