Drew Peterson, an ex Bolingbrook police sergeant was sentenced Thursday to serve 38-years in prison for the murder of his third wife Kathleen Savio. Peterson was convicted of drowning Savio in 2004 in her bathtub.

Peterson could have faced up to 60-years in jail, but judge Edward Burmila gave him so leeway for his time as a police officer and in the military. Peterson, 59-years-old, faced a minimum of 20 years in prison. If Peterson lives throughout his entire sentence, he will be 97-years-old when he gets out of jail.

Judge Burmila told Peterson he would not be granted a retrial and in a dramatic moment seen mostly out of the movies, Peterson shouted, "I did not kill Kathleen!" According to the Chicago Tribune, a relative of Savio's reportedly responded in the Illinois courtroom by shouting back, "Yes you did!"

Peterson's case was highly publicized, with a Lifetime movie made about him, that Peterson claimed guaranteed he would not receive a fair trial. According to CBS Chicago, Peterson also claimed that evidence was altered and witnesses were intimidated.

"What they did uncover was rumors, gossip, outrageous lies, and most importantly, unreliable hearsay. Hearsay that pierced three privileges that have stood for centuries," Peterson said.

After Thursday's sentencing Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow told reporters, "We all got an opportunity to see a psychopath reveal himself in open court." Glasgow called Peterson a "cold-blooded killer."

In addition to Savio's murder, prosecutors believe Peterson may have killed his fourth wife Stacy who is missing.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Savio's sister, Anna Marie Savio-Doman said, "My loss of my baby sister is beyond words. There will be no more birthday parties, backyard gatherings, holiday celebrations or other family activities to share." She went on to say, "I have to say it hurts a lot. I hope it gets better, but I am not confident it will get better. I still talk to her. I hope she can hear me."

According to legal experts, Peterson will likely appeal, but there is little chance he will get one.
