Fans are still reeling from the Season 4 premiere of Arrow, specifically the final scene in which we flash-forward six months to Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) standing at a grave. Showrunner Wendy Mericle and executive producer Marc Guggenheim delivered a post-mortem on Wednesday and addressed some of the major points about that shocking ending scene.

As a refresher, here's what happened in the final moments of the episode. We flashed forward from a blissfully happy Oliver and Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) in the present day (and a quick shot of the engagement ring Oliver plans to use to propose) to six months later. Oliver stands at a grave when his friend Barry Allen, aka The Flash (Grant Gustin), walks up and apologizes for missing the funeral. Ollie asks if it had to with Zoom, and Barry confirms it did.

Oliver then remarks that in the past, he would have thought this was his fault, but now he realizes it isn't his fault but his responsibility. Barry asks what he means, and Ollie says he will "kill him," possibly referring to Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough). Barry asks what he can do, and Oliver tells him he just wants to be left alone. Barry speeds away, leaving Oliver alone. It ends as Oliver silently sheds a tear over the tombstone.

Mericle and Guggenheim spoke to both Entertainment Weekly and TVLine cleared the air about that last scene. Firstly, Guggenheim confirmed that “it’s not a fake-out,” and the person in the grave is really dead. But interestingly, that person's identity is unknown even to the writers!

“We don’t necessarily know who it is right now,” Mericle said. “We’re still figuring the plan out for the season, but we wanted to have resonance. If it doesn’t mean something to the characters, it won’t mean anything to the audience either.”

So, this person is totally coming back through the Lazarus Pit, right?

“We want to bring stakes back to the show,” Mericle said. “We will be finding a way to handle the Lazarus Pit portion of Season 3 in Season 4 in a new, inventive way that I can’t reveal.”

The most obvious solution would be for the writers to have the pit destroyed, but can you destroy something that resurrects?
