The View host Raven Symone has sparked some outrage on social media after comments noting that she would not hire someone based on their "ghetto" name. The comments come after the famed ABC talk show aired a clip of the "Top 60 Ghetto Black Names." Afterwards, Symone noted that she's not being racist by saying she wouldn't hire people with those names; instead, she's being "discriminatory."
And yes, she's cool with that.
"I'm not about to hire you if your name is Watermelondea. It's just not gonna happen," she said on The View. "I'm not gonna hire you."
Take a look at the video stirring up drama below:
Still, while Symone is steadfast in her belief that being discriminatory against those with certain names is A-OK, the comments were enough for people to Freak! The! Crap! Out! online, especially EBONY magazine senior writer Jamilah Lemieux, who noted that Symone is completely overlooking her own "black" name and thus dividing the African American culture.
"The whole world is trying to tear us apart and you want to discount the value of some other black person because she, TOO, has a black name, Raven hyphen alternate spelling of 'Simone'?"
Lemieux then wrote that Symone – oh, we get it! – has "got the nerve."
CNN reports that Symone has been contacted for a comment, but has "not immediately responded" to their request.
Bummer...
So, folks, thoughts? Is this a racism problem or another issue of people being too sensitive?
