Missing: Justin Bieber's tweets. Time last seen: around 11pm on Saturday night.
The Biebs' Twitter account @JustinBieber, followed by almost 35 million, has apparently been hacked...or at least that's what the pop star's fans have been buzzing about on Twitter late Saturday night when the most followed person's tweets mysteriously dissappeared.
Justin may be the latest victim in another Twitter scandal. At around 11pm on Saturday night, followers noticed that Bieber's last simple tweet before the alleged hack was the word "Oh." Shortly after that tweet, all of Bieber's 17,765 tweets somehow disappeared and are no longer visible upon visiting his page, including that last tweet posted only minutes earlier.
His page currently states, as of midnight, that "@justinbieber hasn't tweeted yet." Since we all know that this is impossible for the avid tweeter, this could be a sign that his account has been deactivated either by himself or by his apparent "hacker."
Justin isn't the first hacking victim "attacked" this week. The official account of Burger King was hacked around noon on Monday (Feb. 18). According to Yahoo News:
The fast-food giant's Twitter feed was taken over by someone outside the company who changed the feed's icon to golden arches and tweeted "We just got sold to McDonald's." For the next hour, the feed was filled with more than 50 unauthorized tweets, including some with racial and drug references.
What seemed at first catastrophic for BK actually thrusted the fast-food joint into the spotlight and gained them a "whopper" of new followers: nearly 60,000 in one day.
Another hacking incident that occured this week, although later confessed to be just a prank, was the phony hack of MTV's and BET's Twitter pages. "In an apparent move to exploit the publicity surrounding the Twitter hacks, MTV and BET, two Viacom properties, staged a bogus hack of each other's Twitter accounts," noted by "CSO Online." The two music accounts switched their profile pictures as MTV's account displayed BET's picture, while BET's displayed MTV's. The switch ended after about an hour, with MTV tweeting "Catfish-ed you guys. Thanks for playing!" Viacom hoped this Twitter prank would gain them more publicity and followers, just as it had done for Burger King.
Bieber is no stranger to hackings, as his account was hijacked almost a year ago in 2012. Mashable stated that the hacker unfollowed and blocked some of the pop superstar's fans and sent out a tweet to his 19 million followers:
"19 million my ass. #biebermyballs."
Although the Biebs is already the current frontrunner for the most followers on Twitter and doesn't need to pull a prank in order to gain more, could this be another publicity stunt like the one staged by Viacom, or is Bieber an innocent hacking victim like Burger King? The answer remains unanswered for now.
Hopefully Twitter will get to the bottom of the case soon. In the mean time, Beliebers should please refrain from dilaing 911 again regarding this incident. The cops will not help in tracking down Justin's missing tweets.
