ABC is currently developing a new television series based on the classic romantic comedy movie that starred Julia Roberts, My Best Friend's Wedding. The network is working with producers from the film behind-the-scenes to create a single-camera half-hour comedy that picks up just where the film left off. The series will focus on Roberts' character Julianne Potter as she navigates her life in New York City with best friend George (originally played by Rupert Everett) as her adventurous cohort.
Academy Award winner, and original film writer, Ron Bass will write the script alongside Jessica Amento. Jerry Zucker and Janet Zucker will be back to executive produce the storyline with Mike Menchel. The comedy will be produced through Sony Pictures and Happy Madison Television.
The original film, which featured "America's Sweetheart" Julia Roberts, was not just popular amongst fans in the United States. Columbia Pictures and China Film Co. are currently producing a Chinese language version that is scheduled to be released in China just in time for Valentine's Day 2016.
ABC's reboot of the romantic comedy is just the latest title to hit television radar. The network is also working on a female-led rework of Fantasy Island. Remakes are making an impact across all networks as of late. CBS is currently producing Nancy Drew, MacGyver, Training Day and H.G. Wells' The Island of Dr. Moreau. Fox is finalizing Behind Enemy Lines, and The CW is developing The Notebook and Friday The 13th. NBC only has one in play, securing the rights to Hart to Hart. A reboot of The A-Team is also being shopped around by 20th Century Fox Television while Norman Lear is reworking One Day At A Time, but has not tied it to a network just yet.
With so many reboots and revivals on the rise, original stories are becoming less prominent. That doesn't mean people are automatically accepting reboots however. Critics have shared mixed reviews for shows like Fox's Minority Report, but CBS' Limitless has found early success. Additional series based on movies to debut this fall will include Rush Hour (CBS) and Uncle Buck (ABC).
