Season 3 of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is rolling along quite nicely, though we have yet to see a true focus on the villain of the season to this point. However, it sounds like that could change with the introduction of Powers Boothe as a new bad guy.
Marvel has announced that Boothe has joined the show in a recurring role as Gideon Malick, "a notorious man whose loyalties remain a mystery." That sure sounds like a villain, possibly a Big Bad for Season 3.
Jeph Loeb, Executive Producer on the series and Head of Marvel Television, has more details on the character, and he references one surprising character in particular.
“Gideon is incredibly menacing and in him we have a character that even the stone-cold Grant Ward would fear," Loeb said. "Only someone of Powers’ caliber could deliver the type of ominous and powerful performance we needed.”
Grant Ward is basically a psychopath, so if someone like him would be afraid of this Gideon Malick, then that doesn't bode well for the heroes on our show. Could Gideon have some connection to Lash, the Inhuman that we saw in the Season 3 premiere who attacked the hospital where Lincoln worked? Or perhaps Gideon is connected to the government task force that is hunting down Inhumans?
You may recall that Boothe previously appeared in Marvel's The Avengers as a member of the World Security Council, one of those people on the screens that tried to convince Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) to drop a nuclear bomb on New York to stop the alien threat.
What are your thoughts on Boothe's casting? Do you think this Gideon Malick will be the villain for Season 3, or is he something else altogether? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
