During the 2005-2006 NBA Season, former NBA Commissioner David Stern implemented a mandatory dress code for all players (including D-League players). Despite the obligatory dress code, NBA players managed to maintain a fashionable look to present themselves outside of their uniforms. Players such as Allen Iverson, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and more have all managed to make the NBA one of the most fashionable professional sports league.
The requirement of the dress code came about during the 2005-2006 NBA season due to the hip-hop style, which was deemed unacceptable, as the dress code called for players to improve their look. Allen Iverson portrayed this hip-hop style; he rocked big chains, tall white T-shits, du-rags, Timberland boots, etc. As reported by the Huffington Post, the dress code targeted this style, ruling it inappropriate, thus Iverson was the unofficial yet official incentive for the dress code.
However, the dress code didn't stop Iverson, as reported by Bleacher Report. He maintained his baggy hip-hop-based fashion sense by wearing equally baggy suits. He even matched his footwear by wearing Clarks Wallabees.
As the years progressed, fashion sense did too. Players like Carmelo Anthony, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and more made a stance in the fashion world of the NBA, according to Yahoo Sports.
In the 2009-2010 season, Carmelo Anthony started the fashion trend of hats in the NBA. Melo managed to connect street wear with fashion and proper fit perfectly. Melo's style has most definitely evolved since 2009, but he managed to maintain a fashionable look within the dress code of the NBA. Maybe this has a little something to do with being married to the fashionista and actress LaLa, but Melo has definitely made his mark in the fashion world. He's listed as no. 9 on GQ's list of The Most Stylish NBA Players Ever.

During the 2010-2011 NBA season, not only was Kobe Bryant the most talked about players for winning the NBA Championship without the help of Shaquille O'Neal, for being one of the greatest players of all-time, but also because one of the most fashionable players at the time. Bryant is the face of the Lakers franchise, one of Nike's cornerstones and one of the highest paid athletes in the league. During 2010, Kobe was featured in the 2010 Los Angeles Times Magazine editorial, where he rocked all white. Since then, Kobe has definitely made an impact in fashion.
In the 2011-2012 season, LeBron James evolved his style, as he became the style MVP. LeBron consistently experimented and successfully pulled off several attempts at fashion. Now, most of his looks seem former and par, he managed to make a stance in NBA by wearing clothing that fits. LeBron's look is more conservative and clean (and usually finishes off with a tie). King James was also in GQ's September 2010 issue, as he remains no. 2 on GQ's "The Most Stylish NBA Players Ever" list.
Now, in 2011, (as Wade played alongside LeBron James in Miami), Wade was named no. 1 by Sports Illustrated, according to the Miami New Times as the NBA player with the best fashion sense (by other NBA players!). Dwyane Wade is known as a risk taker, when it comes to style. His style is classic, yet unpredictable as his wardrobe varies from eye-popping color combinations to classic looks.
Last but not least, Russell Westbrook. In 2013, Westbrook named himself as the league's most fashionable dresser. Westbrook's style is extremely bold and eccentric. It's quite avant-garde, as Westbrook makes name in the fashion world outside of basketball by having his own collection in Barney's New York along with a new collection alongside True Religion, as reported by Business Insider. Westbrook has definitely taken fashion in the NBA to another level.
