Scuzzy garage rockers The Men are back with their third album in as many years, the follow-up to 2012's Open Your Heart called New Moon.

They continue on the path away from the howling lo-fi stomp that they used to make a name for themselves. Each album the band has released has seen The Men getting more and more melodic. Hell, the first few songs go by without so-much as a scream.

The album's first two tracks, "Open the Door" and "Half Angel, Half Light" are straight trobadour folk, with the exception of the occasional psych-lite riff on the latter. "Without A Face" with it's deranged Tom Petty sound edges us closer to The Men of albums past before the middle of the album turns into a full-out howl.

The album is all over the place as far as sound goes and, in many places, harkens back to the college rock band's of the 80s and 90s. Many of these songs wouldn't sound out of place on an REM or Pavement record. Of course, by extension, this means I think that the album is very, very good.

If this is what a more melodic The Men sounds like, then I am all for it.

Check out the entire album over at Pitchfork's awesome advance service.

New Moon is out March 5 on Sacred Bones.
