Sister and brother Julianne and Derek Hough are taking their dancing talents to a new television show. The "Dancing with the Stars" alums will produce and choreograph a new scripted television show to air on Starz called "Blackpool."
In a statement on Julianne's website, juliannehough.com, the show will be about, "the dancer's obsession with perfection and the darker side of the glamorous world of ballroom dance."The show is set to revolve around an annual ballroom competition in Blackpool, England. Is it just me or does this sound like the dancing version of NBC's "Smash"?
Hough went on to say about the new show, "Viewers are going to see a twisted, sexy, funny, dark and passionate side of the drama and politics in the world of ballroom dance that delves deeper than spray tans and sequins."
Derek is the only pro to win "Dancing with the Stars" three times, while he and Julianne moved to Britain at the age of 10 to dance competitively. However, both have branched outside of dancing, especially Julianne who may be best known for dating "American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest.
Derek appeared in the film "Cobu #D: New York Nights" and Julianne has appeared in films such as Nicholas Sparks' "Safe Haven" as well as the remake of "Footloose."
Julianne has already branched out of dancing and movies with experience as a sucessful country singer. Her debut album in 2008 hit number one on the Billboard Country Album Chart and number three on the Billboard 200.
When talking to the Hollywood Reporter about the new show on Starz Julianne said, "We're going to start with our experiences in the world and stories that we've either seen or gone through, but it'll be fun to be able to elaborate and fictionalize these characters."
It will be interesting to see how this new show does. Shows that feature song and dance have been all the rage for the last couple years with "Glee" and "Smash" being big hits, so it's not a bad idea for the siblings to try and capitalize on their expertise and fame.
