Based on the cult classic from Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez, El Rey Network will air the Season 2 finale of From Dusk Till Dawn. In an exclusive interview with MStars News, D.J. Cotrona (Seth Gecko) and Jesse Garcia (Ranger Freddie Gonzalez) discuss what's coming up before the last episode of the season.
As we previously mentioned, Santánico (Eiza González) and Richie (Zane Holtz) are outside of Houston, living like Bonnie and Clyde, while Seth and Kate (Madison Davenport) are scraping by south of the border. Freddie Gonzalez protects his wife and daughter from the outside world in a Houston suburb. Carlos Madrigal (Wilmer Valderrama) and Scott (Brandon Soo Hoo) suddenly emerge from ruins of the Titty Twister. They will all come together to face off against an even bigger threat, Lord Amancio Malvado (Esai Morales).
Before the season finale airs this Tuesday, October 27 on El Rey Network, Cotrona and Garcia discuss their favorite moments from the sophomore season, their character arcs, and what's in store for viewers.
MStars News: Tell me about finding the chemistry between you and Zane Holtz during the first season, which to me, is like the best part of the show.
D. J. Cotrona: For the first season, I know the majority of the stuff is Zane and I bouncing back and forth between each other. Zane and I worked...well to be honest, we didn't work at all. We shoot the show really quickly, with not a lot of prep. So we really took it upon ourselves to try and not f*ck up.
Every night Zane and I would get together. We would ramble our dialogue back and forth. It's kinda like that scene in Reservoir Dogs. You know which one I'm talking about?
MS: The Bathroom Scene! For those who haven't seen the movie, undercover cop Freddy Newandyke (Tim Roth) has to rehearse a 15-page script about a drug deal almost gone horribly wrong. In a story within a story, while in the bathroom, Freddy pretends to recount the crime tale of being cornered by cops, who are telling their version of a speeding tick gone horribly wrong.
DC: That one! You know what I mean? If you watch Reservoir Dogs, that's literally what we did. We just rambled and walked around in a circle. We just rambled to each other until we didn't even have to think. And we had it!
MS: From the first season, the pilot is essentially the liquor store robbery from the movie. Do you remember any anecdotes from the first episode?
Jesse Garcia: I think it was the first take, one of the first takes, where you and Zane were walking from the car to the convenience store. Robert [Rodriguez] was like, "Sh*t! That's how they're going to do it. They didn't mess up. They ended up using the first take.
DC: Yeah! That first shot of us together, the walk and the talk. First day, first shot, first take.
JG: For them.
DC: For us. We just clicked.
MS: Tell me about working together as an ensemble cast. In the first season, your characters end up teaming together to stay alive and fight the vampires at the Titty Twister.
DC: There's no interesting theory or answer. We just sit in a room and clunk at least the dialogue to each other until it feels right.
JG: Until it works.
DC: We dissect it enough so that we understand it. We all get giant pieces of material. Everyone kinda works differently.
JG: The first season they set us up in condos.
DC: It's like Melrose Place with guns.
JG: We would have those big days and go to each other's condos. And rehearse with each other. We opted to do a lot of work. Nobody wanted to be that person that fu*ked up. You know what I mean? Especially being in a Robert Rodriguez show.
MS: Tell me about working with Robert Rodriguez.
JG: You want to live up to his name, live up to the name of the show. At the end of the day, to answer your question, we just put in the work.
DC: There's also, I think, there's no mistakes and Robert makes us all feel that way. When you get to a job, your director has a certain opinion. The project has a certain tone. You work hard to stay within those parameters. So it's like trying to color in and stay between the lines. You know I expected that very much, but with this one, Robert really trusts us to go for it. He's big on following your instincts and reminding everybody, there's no such thing as a mistake.
MS: I'm loving the dialogue from this second season. My favorite monologue is from the second episode, " I'm not your enemy, and I'm not your friend. I'm simply here for what's mine."
DC: Yeah, that's my favorite too!
MS: Tell me about finding the rhythm to to the dialogue.
DC: When it comes to big verbose means of dialogue, that is a huge gift. Because when you feel that safe, you just go nuts and try ridiculous sh*t. It works better and you find the natural vibe of it faster. And I think you have more fun with it. At the end of the day, if we're having fun with it, it just translates better. It juts makes it more enjoyable.
JG: These guys just kill it! Damn if I could kill those monologues.I can't do that! Gimme a couple words here and there! I'm okay with that! Gimme a little bit of that!
[From this point on, we discuss the ninth episode, which ended on a major cliffhanger.]
In our recent recap, Santánico found herself in a deadly confrontation against Malvado. With the help of Seth, Santánico managed to strike back at Malavdo and turn him into dust. With Richie captured, Carlos pulled out his gun and started shooting at Kate. Dropping to the floor, Kate whimpered her brother's name as she lied there bleeding.
MS: With the season finale coming up, what do you want the audiences to come away with?
JG: The fight scenes! The fight scenes at the end of the show, at the end of the season, are ridiculous!
DC: They're mad! Robert put out all the stops on this one!
JG: Yeah! The finale is going to be awesome!
