Hip-hop mogul Master P recently revealed that he passed on signing a slew of big-name rappers to No Limit Records several years ago, including Eminem. But according to New Orleans emcee Sillk The Shocker, there's one big reason why the Ghetto D superstar ultimately ignored the infamous Detroit lyricist.
During a follow-up interview with HipHopDX on October 22, The Shocker elaborated:
"I know that we was cool with T.I... Eminem for sure. One other person that we were really close to signing was India Arie. She came to the office and we were about to [sign her]. We just didn't know what to do with her, but we knew she was talented. And we knew Eminem was super talented. We just didn't know how to make that transition with a white rapper. But hey, we messed up on that one. We definitely was close to signing Eminem and India Arie. I know P was close with T.I. I wasn't a part of that conversation. But definitely those two. We just didn't know what to do with them."
Still, Slim Shady was very close to securing a deal after meeting with the crew in Los Angeles:
"We didn't get the full gist of him but he had talent then," Sillk explains. "He was nice. I can see him being on 'No Limit Soldiers.' Eminem showed love. We met Eminem out here in [LA]. He respected No Limit and we respected him. We were really close to doing a song with him. Much love to Eminem."
Thankfully, the "Rap God" hit-maker's career still managed to skyrocket several years later.
Check out the TRU's hypemans initial explanation to HipHopDX:
"Let me tell you how that happened. You know I lived in The Bay. At first I'm out there hustling, doing my thing. Everybody know who I am... I had a lot of underground people. People seen what I did business-wise, so a lot of guys called me. Anybody you can think of called me for advice or thinking, 'What can I do to get with No Limit?' From Eminem to T.I. to anybody you could think of, we done had that conversation where they wanted to be with No Limit. It was sad, but [2Pac] was thinking, 'What could I do?' Same thing with Snoop Dogg. People started checking for us because they knew we was making money. They know we was printing money. They making money now. We was printing money. Everybody want to be with the people that are winning. I don't care if you're an R&B singer or whoever, we had some kind of influence on you... Everybody wanted to be a soldier... Everybody reached out. Nas came. Everybody reached out."
Will Em even bother to respond?
