The latest episode of Supernatural Season 11, entitled "Baby," was told entirely from the Impala's perspective, but perhaps the most interesting scenes involved the surprise return of Young John Winchester, played by Matt Cohen, who's currently guest starring on Shonda Rhimes' ABC series How to Get Away with Murder. The scene had implications about God, The Darkness, and more, and stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles commented on it in a recent interview.
In the scene, John told a sleeping Sam, who was either dreaming or having a vision, that "The Darkness is coming" and to remember that "God helps those who help themselves." When Sam asked John who he really was, the vision ended.
Padalecki spoke to TVLine and discussed how much fun it was to film that scene. “It was fun for me to play that part of Sam,” he said. “Sam’s not often really caught off guard like that. He’s been through a lot. He’s been to Hell and to Heaven and purgatory and he’s died and killed, so Sam’s not often caught totally off guard. So that was a fun direction for me to go with him.”
But what does the scene actually mean for the show? Keep in mind that later in the episode, we learned that the half-ghoul, half-vampire creatures were amassing an army to combat The Darkness, so it's clear that even the monsters are worried about what's happening.
"[It] "goes back to those unique alliances that are taking shape," Ackles said. "People are getting their defenses together... and being like, 'Listen, it's not about you and me anymore. It's about us, and we're going to lose all of this if we don't join forces and man up.'"
These alliances will form among the usual players (Castiel, Crowley, and Rowena) as everyone searches for safety as The Darkness looms. According to the two stars, more characters will start to come out of the woodwork soon.
"In and around Episode 9 and 10, we'll have some other cool characters that have some interesting things to say about The Darkness," Padalecki said.
"And what she is and where she comes from and how she ties into the whole thing," Ackles added.
