Oprah Winfrey had some explaining to do after reports went crazy with a man by the name of Calvin Mitchell claiming to be the TV host's abandoned "secret son." According to US Magazine, Winfrey has cleared the air, explaining the relationship she had with Mitchell, after she was"ambushed" by him in NYC earlier this month.
"I met Calvin around the early '90s, I think it was 1992," Winfrey, 61, explained. "I was doing a film for television called There Are No Children Here. We were shooting in the projects in Chicago and I was sitting on set during a break, and this cute little sparkly eyed boy came underneath the yellow tape to hand me a soda."
Winfrey claimed that Mitchell's personality is what had her attracted to the little boy. She said after she met him she, and her partner, Stedman Graham decided to help him and his family out putting the boy in private school, and finding a job for his mother.
"I was so charmed by him that I started talking to him about his family, his school life, and found out that he was in a situation where his mother didn't have a job and they were stuck in the projects," Winfrey stated.
She continued, "I found a school in Mississippi that was a private boarding school because I thought if I could remove him from the environment that he'd been accustomed to growing up in, that maybe that would be helpful to him," the 61-year-old said in her interview with Entertainment Tonight's Nancy O'Dell.
The OWN network creator also admitted that she and her partner gave Mitchell a number of tries after they found out he wasn't going to school like he was supposed to. One of the issues was Mitchell didn't have an alarm clock to help wake him up.
"We went out, Stedman and I, went to Kmart that moment, got a bag full of clocks, came back to the house, taught them how to set the alarm and all that," she remembered.
Winfrey revealed that Mitchell decided to drop out of the school during his teenage years because he claimed to Winfrey, "the teachers didn't like him."
After Mitchell decided to drop out, Winfrey told the trouble teen: "Calvin, this is the moment. This is a seminal moment for you,'" she added, "'I know you are 16 and can't see the road ahead, but if you leave this school and refuse to get an education - I have tried to offer you an education twice - there isn't another school I can put you in. If you leave this school, I am done. There is nothing else I can do.' ... And that was my last conversation with Calvin in the early '90s."
In earlier report from Radar Online, Mitchell claimed that his mistakes caused Winfrey to "abandon" him.
"I want to ask Oprah, 'Why did you leave me? Why did you leave me?'" he questioned the woman who took him under her wing. "I'm still empty. I'm still searching. I don't have closure to this. I just don't understand."
When the now 35-year-old confronted Winfrey in New York City after her appearance on The Late Show on Oct. 15, Winfrey didn't know who he was at first.
"As I left, and he was looking so forlorn, he was like, 'Can I speak to you?' So I said to somebody on my team, 'Will somebody get Calvin's number so I can contact him later?'" Winfrey was basically caught by surprise as Mitchell was standing with The National Enquirer reporters.
Mitchell's reunion with Winfrey probably won't happen anytime soon after she learned how the set up was arranged. "When I realized the whole thing was a setup, I was no longer interested in speaking to him," Winfrey declared.
