Because he means well, the theater director has a repetitive habit of giving them more money that their services provide. He wants so them can get out of the life. This leads to all kinds of complications when one of the girls, Isabella Patterson, (Imogen Poots) shows up to audition for his latest play. The hooker-turned-actress now has to star alongside Arnold's wife (Hahn), who is caught up with her ex-lover (Rhys Ifans).
In an interview with Roger Ebert, The Last Picture Show director, Peter Bogdanovich, explains how the story came about, "I didn't think about "She's Funny That Way" being a continuation of what I was doing in those earlier pictures, but as Hemingway said, "Write about what you know." I know the theater because I started there as an actor when I was fifteen and then directed professionally at the age of twenty when I did "The Big Knife" in New York."

In an interview with Indiewire, Wilson describes the chemistry between him and Hahn,"I think with chemistry that it's always sort of, I think there's two parts to it. There's what is on screen and then for us, it's if you get along with the people and enjoy showing up at work. And that was really nice on this movie, because I think we all did get along and hung out afterwards and stuff."
She's Funny That Way arrives on DVD and Blu-ray on November 3.
