A partnership between Lions Gate Entertainment Group and the planned Avatron Smart Park outside Atlanta has paved the way for the latest studio-themed amusement park. With Hunger Games attractions already planned, Lionsgate is positioning themselves as the next Disney World or Universal Studios -- and with licenses to franchises including Divergent, Twilight and Saw, the studio has the potential to make the park a big hit.
Picture it; Twilight: The 3-D Experience, a Divergent-themed roller coaster or Saw: The Ride. All are a possibility with the new park. Lionsgate has exclusive rights to the Hunger Games and Saw franchises, and their acquisition of Summit Entertainment in 2012 added the Twilight, Divergent and Step Up franchises to their roster.
In a press release, the park announced that it had already acquired the licensing rights for The Hunger Games, Step Up and 2013 sleeper hit Now You See Me. If everything goes according to plan, visitors can expect related attractions when the park opens in 2019.
"The innovative storytelling platforms we offer provide different ways and dimensions for fans of all three franchises to continue and extend their personal engagement,” Avatron president Jo Ram said in the statement.
It is unclear if Lionsgate's involvement in the park was a recent partnership or initially a part of the Avatron Smart Park's development plan. The park was initially announced in March by Avatron USA Development LLC, with the Lionsgate partnership announced eight months later.
Ram, however, wants visitors to think of Avatron as more than just another movie studio theme park. She wants it to be a game-changer in the world of interactive user experiences. The Atlanta Business Chronicle reports that users will interact with RFID chips and Kinect sensors to enter an immersive world of holograms, 3-D videos and fully immersive attractions.
“Perhaps what sets AVATRON apart is the highly individualized experience we are creating for the end-user," Ram said in the first official press release. "Our interactive platforms cannot be replicated to scale inside the home. The goal is to deliver the most technologically advanced and real-time socially engaged entertainment experience.”
