Tegan and Sara's latest album, Heartthrob, is an exploration into the world of pop music for the singer-songwriter sisters and their song "Now I'm All Messed Up" is a prime example of how they nailed it on the head. The music video that they have provided for the track is a lyric video, projecting the words you are hearing onto the screen as you listen to the song. Many artists do it as a promotional ploy, but it just feels so fitting for the Quin twins' song. Another bonus is that the lyrics are handwritten allowing for a more intimate feel. Plus the introduction of water to the words allows the viewer to feel the despair and yearning that the song is meant to conjure, without the use of an actual music video.
Heartthrob is definitely a change for Tegan and Sara, but it has gained a ton of acclaim and recognition. The duo have dabbled in pop on past albums The Con and Sainthood, but have never fully jumped right into in until Heartthrob. Their sound was mainly a mix of indie rock tunes with some hints of dance and Electronica mixed in. As a fan of these two talented women, I took the announcement of this album with a grain of salt, especially after hearing of the direction they were headed with it. Fortunately I was pleasantly surprised with how it turned out.
Spin gave Heartthrob an 8 out of 10 rating. Reviewer Jon Young had complimented the album and then picked out stand out tracks to talk about. For this song he said:
"For flaming, deranged drama, however, there's no topping 'Now I'm All Messed Up,' a masterpiece of controlled tension that starts slowly with morose observations like, 'Why won't you just comfort me?' before erupting into full-blast melodrama, with tortured voices exclaiming, 'Go / Please stay!' in a furious tug of war. In less-artful hands, these could be tacky histrionics, but here, Tegan and Sara make them simply gripping."
Enjoy:
