A 16-year-old Florida high school student was lauded as a hero by fellow classmates after he bravely disarmed a gunman on a crowded school bus last week. As a reward for his protective actions, the young man was placed on emergency suspension for three days pending further investigation. According to several eye-witnesses, if the student hadn't disarmed the threatening football player who held the gun in his possession, he definitely would have started shooting. According to the student who took action (who wishes to remain unnamed out of fear for his safetly), "it's dumb" to get suspended for ultimately doing the right thing.
According to recent reports, several students from Cypress Lake High School in Fort Meyers, Florida were riding the bus home last week when a well-known football player took out a gun and began threatening a fellow teammate. The 16-year-old "hero" wrestled the loaded .22 caliber RG-14 revolver out of the unidentified gunman's hands, and believes that there was "no doubt" he saved a life by doing so (as quoted by UPI). A student who witnessed the potentially deadly incident said of the suspect, "I think he was really going to shoot him right then and there."
One day following the event, school authorities suspended the young man who disarmed the gunman for three days. As UPI reports, Florida law allows administrators to place anyone involved in such an incident on emergency suspension pending a hearing.
The teen's mother recently told local news media, "If they wouldn't've did what they had to do on that bus, I think there would have been a lot of fatalities."
Police confirm that the suspected gunman was ultimately charged with possession of a firearm on school property and assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill. Because the school bus surveillance cameras were not working at the time, there's no video evidence of the incident. The case is still ongoing.
According to the teen who may have saved several lives, "It's dumb. How they going to suspend me for doing the right thing?"
The school has refused to comment on the incident - district spokesman Alberto Rodriguez released in a statement, "We cannot discuss specifics involving students. Florida law allows the principal to suspend a student immediately pending a hearing."
Reports confirm that the student who disarmed the aggressive gunman was informed that he could return to school on Monday, March 4.
