Vatican City tourists may want to choose a different time to visit. The Sistine Chapel, which contains the famous "Creation of Adam" within its frescoes by artist Michelangelo, has closed in advance preparation of the conclave that will select the new pope.

Other sections of the Vatican, such as the Borgia apartment will remain open to visitors.

115 "cardinal electors" will meet for the conclave to vote on who they believe should be the new leader of the Holy Roman Catholic Church. In a nearly unprecedented move, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI resigned last Thursday citing concerns over his failing health.

Cardinals have already begun pre-conclave meetings and the actual meetings are expected to start sometime next week and the Vatican says that it expects a new pope will be elected by Easter, which falls on March 31. Electors must be not yet 80 years of age and are sworn to secrecy regarding the vote, on pain of excommunication.

A stove will be installed in the Chapel. The Vatican has fully stocked kitchens and proper heating arrangements; however, this stove serves a special purpose. Electors use it to burn their ballots after voting. When white smoke can be seen from outside the Vatican, it signifies that a new pope has been chosen.

The last time the Sistine Chapel was closed for a conclave was in 2005, after the death of Pope John Paul II. The conclave resulted in the election of Benedict XVI. Among the preparations put in place 8 years ago was the installation of a false floor, underneath which sat devices that would render any bugs or listening devices within the chapel inoperative.

As of press time, 103 cardinals have arrived for the conclave. Meetings will be delayed until the remaining 12 cardinals make it to the Vatican.
