The Federal Aviation Administration and the FBI are looking into a commercial airline pilot's report that he spotted an unmanned drone aircraft flying over JFK International Airport.

LiveATC.net captured calls to controllers in which the Alitalia pilot can be heard to say “We saw a drone, a drone aircraft."

The pilot reportedly spotted the drone somewhere over the Brooklyn borough late Monday afternoon. He has told officials that the aircraft was flying at an altitude of 1,500 feet.

"The FAA is investigating a report from the pilot of an international airline that he saw a small, unmanned or remote-controlled aircraft while on final approach to Runway 31 Right at John F. Kennedy International Airport at about 2 p.m.,” the agency said in a statement released to reporters.

Air traffic reporters warned other incoming pilots of the possible drone, but none of the other pilots claim to have seen it.

According to a statement released by the FBI, the aircraft in question was “black in color and no more than three feet wide with four propellers.” The aircraft allegedly came within 200 feet of the Alitalia commercial flight and the FBI has requested help from citizens in finding its operator.

Drones have been in the news a lot lately due to their somewhat unpopular use by President Barack Obama. Talk of a “kill list” has raised the ire of many constitutional rights advocates who view their use as a violation of due process.

As of press time it is unknown if the reported drone was militaristic or merely a hobbyist’s R/C plane. Either way, the operator could be in major trouble. According to the FAA, remote controlled toy planes are only allowed to be 400 feet off the ground at any given time.

What do you guys think? Could El-P of Company Flow fame be right? Are there Drones over Brooklyn?
