The main villain of Season 11 of Supernatural is The Darkness, the pre-Biblical entity that fans learned in a recent episode is actually God's sister. But will God help or hinder Sam and Dean Winchester (Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles) in their quest to stop The Darkness? The actors drop some spoilers on that subject in a new interview.
The leading men spoke to Entertainment Weekly, which asked if the brothers could defeat the Darkness without God's help. Ackles said he didn't think they could, but Padalecki then added more on that point and even indicated that God might actually be opposed to the brothers!
"Whether or not the boys can fight the Darkness without God is a question for us as audience members but is one of those things that's not a question for the Winchesters. They're going to do it come hell or high water, with God's help or with God trying to stop them," Padalecki said. "I'm not saying which of those is going to be the case, but no matter what, I think the boys are committed to righting this wrong. So with or without God's help, the boys are going to try and stop the Darkness."
God attempting to stop the Winchesters would certainly be an interesting wrinkle to the story. Fans have assumed that if God returns, then it would be to help lock his sister away once more. But what if, for some reason, he decides to ally with his sister rather than oppose her?
This sister reveal also has other implications. Do God and The Darkness have parents? Just how old are they? What does this all mean?
To complicate matters even further, Ackles then suggested that perhaps the Darkness wasn't really evil after all.
"She is still assessing what this creation is that God made and I think the very famous line of her so far is that 'He is the light and I am the opposite of that, I am the Darkness.' What's interesting is, I'm not sure if that's inherently bad or if that actually could be something that is beneficial," he said.
"It's weird. We're setting it up as the ultimate evil, but there's also this question of, 'Well, is it?' And I think we're going to try to play with that a little bit," he added. "So does she think that everyone is the enemy? No, I don't think so. It's an interesting character and I don't know how we're going to deal with it."
So we could have God fighting our heroes and The Darkness might not be evil. My head hurts.
