To some, GOP presidential candidate Ben Carson is a smart man. To others, he's nowhere near the type of person they want to see run the United States. But to Real Time host Bill Maher? Well, Carson is a guy who: 1) owns a painting of him next to Jesus Christ, and 2) believes in a religion that apparently is bummed that the world is still in existence.
"This is a painting that hangs in Ben Carson's home," Maher said during New Rules, showing off the Republican candidate's portrait. He added, "...of him and Jesus apparently enjoying a spa day. So yes, you can believe whatever you want and still run for office, but it's gotta work the other way, too. As a voter, it's perfectly fine for me to say, 'Ut uh, Dr. Giggles, because you, sir, are a clear and present ding-dong.'"
Maher then went on to detail Carson's religion, explaining that the neurosurgeon is a "Seventh-day Adventist." Apparently, the religion was founded back in the 19th century. Per the comedian, Pastor William Miller, who headed the religion, guaranteed his followers that Christ was coming back to Earth on Oct. 22, 1844.
Of course, he never did.
"Seventh-day Adventists are obsessed with the world ending, and refer to the world not ending in 1844 as 'the great disappointment,'" Maher said.
Which is kind of a bummer.
Check out the segment on Ben Carson below at the 2:43 mark.
The comedian explained that, in politics, it's okay to disagree on several important issues, but to disagree on the Earth sticking around, well, that's unacceptable.
Another season of #RealTimeHBO is in the books, er, on the screens! Thanks for watching.
