On Sunday afternoon, highway clean-up crews in West Virginia were thanking their lucky stars that they had shoes on. The crews were dispatched to clean up a spill of LEGO blocks on busy Interstate 79.
The colorful building blocks were scattered across the left lane of I-79, forcing workers to shut down t while the mess was cleared. Apparently, LEGOs aren't only dangerous to barefeet. Authorities claimed the plastic toys can cause slippery road conditions as well.
The photo of the incident was posted to Facebook by Anmoore, W.V. firefighter Eric McClain, who was dispatched to help clear the highway.
The story was initially reported by WDTV.com and one commenter postulated a theory behind the mess.
"I saw this happen. A giant LEGO man was driving a car made out of LEGOs, lost control, hit the guardrail, and exploded into a thousand pieces. Investigators are trying to reconstruct the scene, and the car," the anonymous commenter said.
Awesome though that idea may be, a woman named Tiffany Lantz quickly came forward on Facebook as the culprit behind the LEGOs spill on the highway.
"Those LEGOs belonged to my 11 yr old son they were in totes strapped to the top of the Durango they fell off strap came loose he cried it seemed like forever but I tried to recover as many as I could cause I don't have the money to buy him anymore," Lantz posted.
"Sorry to anyone who got stuck in traffic," Lantz said, referring to the hours-long delay of I-79.
The image of the LEGO spill went viral on social news site Reddit, gaining more than 16,000 upvotes as well as the sympathy of several commenters (who, it should be noted, were probably not inconvenienced by the spill).
"If I knew I was stuck in a traffic jam due to a LEGO spill I wouldn't be the slightest bit mad and if I knew it was due to a freak accident and they belonged to some kid I'd do my best to try and help recover as many as possible," wrote one user. "No child should have to go through the trauma of losing their LEGOs on a freeway," said one commenter.
What do you think? Would a LEGO spill be awesome or just a pain?
Sound off in the comments.
