Some might think it's pretty easy for a black man to get a taxi in New York City in 2015, but apparently, well, it's not. Today Show weatherman Al Roker reportedly had some issues getting picked up by a cab this weekend. Because of that, he's going with Uber.
Roker reportedly took to Twitter on Saturday evening to express his disappointment with the New York City taxi service, noting that he "filed a complaint" against NYC Yellow Cab due to the racist event he had experienced alongside his 13-year-old son.
Now, while some might argue the racist nature of the situation, Roker tweeted out that that the cab picked up a white guy who stood just a block away.
Filed a complaint today after getting passed up again by a NYC Yellow cab. Cabbie picked up a white guy a block away. Wonder why Uber wins?

This happens to folks of color every day. And while most cabbies do their job, there are those ignorant, racist ones who hurt the others — Al Roker (@alroker) November 22, 2015
The New York Daily News reports that Taxi and Limousine Commission Chair Meera Joshi noted, "Service refusal goes to the core of the taxi industry's social contract with the riding public and it will not be tolerated. We're grateful that Mr. Roker took the time to file a complaint, and I can assure him that we will investigate this thoroughly and take every appropriate action."
Which means, if you're familiar with the way New York City organizations tend to work, that, more than likely, nothing is going to happen.
What really hurts, my 13 yr. old boy was with me and asked why the cabbie passed us. I said, "Nick, ignorant people make dumb choices"

Hopefully @nyctaxi weeds out the bad apples. Looking forward to a hearing and dealing with this. I will keep you posted — Al Roker (@alroker) November 22, 2015
So, Uber, it looks like you just got yourself a ringing endorsement from Al Roker. Congrats!
