During the recent international soccer break, Belgian soccer star Radja Nainggolan was getting ready to play a game against Spain. According to The Mirror, while relaxing before the match in an Antwerp hotel (a game that would later be cancelled due to a security risk with suspected terrorists in the area after the Paris attacks), the 27-year-old was reported by hotel guests as a potential terrorist.
According to The Mirror, the AS Roma midfielder, whose father is of Indonesian descent, reportedly caused alarm with his hat and tattoos. However, the police attending the scene immediately recognized the star player, dismissing the incident as nothing more than an innocent mistake.
After recent events in Europe, it's understandable that people would be on edge. Although, It's unfortunate that Nainggolan's looks played a part in the police being called. The Roma midfielder seemingly took it all in stride, however and posed for photos with some of the officers while admitting he knew his look was scary to some.
"Obviously, I have a look that is scary," Nainggolan told a Belgian newspaper. "Fortunately, the police recognized me."
While Nainggolan probably won't be lacing it up for the Jabba Wakkis anytime soon, he does seem like a guy you could share a pizza slice with. Maybe even a good soccer kick around too.
The midfielder has risen to prominence over the last couple of seasons. He barely missed out on a spot for the 23-man roster at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, but he's been a regular for the Belgium squad in their qualifying run to Euro 2016 in France, and looks like a key figure for Marc Wilmots side. For now, Nainggolan returns to Rome ahead of his club team's weekend fixture against Bologna in Serie A action.
