After the comic book industry was changed forever by The Dark Knight Returns, DC Comics is about to release its latest installment. This is the perfect opportunity to check out The Dark Knight III: The Master Race #1, from Frank Miller (Sin City) and co-writer Brian Azzarello (100 Bullets).
As we previously mentioned,The Spirit writer/director made the announcement on Twitter, stating, "I hope that by now my silence is deafening." After the climatic events from DK2, is Bruce Wayne ready to put on the Bat-Suit one more time? Or is someone else ready to to take on the Batman mantle for a whole new generation?
We have 5 reasons why we have to buy The Dark Knight III: The Master Race: #1 here:
5) The Dark Knight Returns
It all started with Miller's dark take on the caped crusader. Moving away from lighthearted and campy tones from Batman '66, Bruce Wayne became self-destructive and obsessed as his rogue gallery, including The Joker and Two-Face. This was also the first time Batman had a female counterpart as a young Carrie Kelley put on the Robin costume. You can tell the upcoming Batman v. Superman movie is heavily influenced by the climactic battle to the death between Batman and Superman.
4) Klaus Janson Is Back!
This critic believes what was really missing from the sequel, The Dark Knight Strikes Again, was Klaus Janson's artwork. Miller went for a surrealistic and hyper-real atmosphere, moving away from the grounded and gritty vibe of the original. But with Janson back this time, teamed up with renowned artist Andy Kubert, the pages are going to be brilliantly eye-popping.
3) Broken City
In this critic's opinion, this has the best noir interpretation of the Dark Knight. In Batman #620-625, the Wonder Woman scribe and his 100 Bullets collaborator, artist Eduardo Risso, depicted the caped crusader in an old-school noir tale. In the dialogue, everyone refers to the anti-hero as "detective." And best of all, Killer Croc is depicted as a flashy pimp. Say what you will about the rumors, if it's Azzarello's voice you hear, that's definitely all right by me!
2) The Covers!
According to IGN, every artist you can think of is contributing to this variant cover galore. Just to name a few, before we go cross-eyed, there's Jim Lee, Jason Fabok, Kelley Jones, Kevin Eastman, Tony Daniel, and Jim Lee. You must have a pretty big piggy bank if you're going to collect them all.
1) The Dark Knight 4
In an interview with Newsarama, the Sin City director teased the third chapter builds to something bigger, " It sure does. I'll read what Brian's doing, and I will respond to that. I know what he's doing and I applaud him completely, and I can't wait to get started on my next book."
Just in time for the 30th anniversary of The Dark Knight Returns, The Dark Knight III: The Master Race #1 arrives November 25.
