Late night television could be getting a whole lot more interesting. The New York Posts's Linda Stasi is reporting that NBC is grooming the "King of All Media" to replace Jimmy Fallon at 12:35AM. Could Howard Stern take over "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon"? Now, these may all just be rumors, but it was just last weekend word broke that NBC was pushing Jay Leno out in favor of the younger Jimmy Fallon. So maybe there is something to the rumors.
With NBC and its horrible track record with late night hosts (remember the Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien fiasco?) who knows what to believe anymore. However, Leno's contract is up in 2014 and Jimmy Fallon is the likely replacement. Fallon could give NBC a much needed boost from a younger audience in that time slot.
Let's not forget though, how NBC's late night shifting ended last time. Leno retired, Conan replaced him, Leno got his own show before Conan, then Conan left when NBC wanted to push the "Tonight Show" back. Through everything that is happening, Leno continues to, and has always, gotten great ratings.
Stern is currently still hosting a radio show on SiriusXM and also was a judge on NBC's "America's Got Talent" last season. So would a 59-year-old Howard Stern make sense taking over the "Late Show?" That depends on who you ask.
There is no denying the success Stern has had through the years. He is almost always a ratings hit whenever he appears as a guest and he keeps people on their toes. However, Stern has given the late night TV hosting gig a try before and it hasn't worked out.
Stern; however, could keep "Late Night" relevant with his headline grabbing antics and he knows how to draw attention to himself. The radio veteran also is known to be a great interviewer who isn't afraid to ask the tough questions.
When Stasi and the Post reached out to Stern's agent Don Buchwald and new NBC head of late night Doug Vaughan, neither would comment. I guess we will have to wait and see what Stern says on his satellite radio show. Be sure to keep it here with Mstarz as we update you on the latest news involving NBC's rumored late night lineup.
