Before everyone settled in to feast on turkey and stuffing and potatoes, Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. offered a different kind of treat when they appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live Tuesday and debuted the trailer for Captain America: Civil War. In the aftermath of that, an official plot synopsis has been released.
Comic Book Movie has posted the synopsis, which you can check out below.
"Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War finds Steve Rogers leading the newly formed team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. But after another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps—one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability. Get ready to pick a side and join the nonstop action playing out on two fronts when Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War opens in U.S. theaters in May."
There's a lot to unpack there, but let's start with where we left off at the end of The Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man. At the end of the second Avengers film, we saw Captain America leading the new team, which consisted of Falcon and Scarlet Witch, among others.
Then, in the post-credits scene of Ant-Man, we saw Falcon and Captain America talking to Bucky Barnes, and they mention something about "the Accords." Fans immediately recognized this as a reference to Civil War, and the synopsis expands on this. More surprising is the idea that the Tony Stark we've seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe would support government oversight, though readers of the Civil War Comic are probably not shocked to hear that.
