Alex Pettyfer has revealed he clashed with Channing Tatum, his Magic Mike co-star, on set. The British actor spoke to Bret Easton Ellis on his podcast, confirming rumors that Tatum did not like him.
Ellis asked Pettyfer about rumors the two had issues on the set of the 2012 stripper flick.
Pettyfer replied, "It's true. Because Channing Tatum does not like me—and for many reasons, many being my own fault."
Tatum had already heard of Pettyfer's reputation and didn't want him in the movie.
The actor said, "I had a very negative past relating to the things that I had done on movies and the promotion of movies. And Channing Tatum is an extraordinarily smart businessman."
Tatum was investing his own money in the film and saw Pettyfer as a potential risk. But Tatum finally agreed at the urging of director Steven Soderbergh.
The I Am Number Four actor felt uncomfortable on the set and tried to keep out of the way, which led to people thinking he was too good for them.
Pettyfer explains, "I was scared to speak. I actually did my work and I sat in the corner and listened to music because I had been told anything I did was wrong by my reps. I was very insecure as a human being. That also gave me a bad rep because everyone was like, 'Alex doesn't speak because he thinks he's better than everyone else.'"
During filming, it was reported that Tatum thought Pettyfer was a "jerk" and a "diva."
The relationship between Tatum and Pettyfer went from bad to worse after Pettyfer rented an apartment from a friend of Tatum's, with his then-fiancée Riley Keough.
Pettyfer claims he had trouble breathing in the apartment, which he believed was caused by his allergies to dust and mold. The couple moved out suddenly, after Pettyfer's cousin died. The actor claims paying the rent was not a priority as he was grieving.
Channing sent him an angry email demanding that he pay his friend.
Pettyfer recalls, "All of a sudden, I got a very negative email from Channing saying, 'Don't f*ck my friends. You owe money. Pay the f*cking money. Don't be a clown."
The Beastly actor replied to the email, but never paid the money he owed.
The feud made things a little tense when they had to do do reshoots on the movie. But, Pettyfer says he learned a lesson and knows he should have acted differently.
Pettyfer explained, "Channing was actually an incredible influence on me because after this whole situation happened—this was kind of the end of my immaturity and all my experiences put into one. And Steven Soderbergh was a huge part of that as well and I owe my life to that man."
