Blockbuster movie "Oz: the Great and Powerful" opened in theaters this weekend and there are already talks of a sequel according to Variety. The movie adaptation of L. Frank Baum's books is starring James Franco, Mila Kunis, and Michelle Williams. Variety is reporting that the movie could make as much as $80 million at the box office this weekend. As we all know, when a movie makes a lot of money, they will definitely want to make another one. This is likely the case with Disney.
Disney hasn't revealed plot details for the second movie, but they already hired Mitchell Kapner to write the screenplay according to Variety. Kapner wrote the screenplay for "Oz: the Great and Powerful" along with David Lindsay-Abaire.
The Variety article states, "While no plot details are yet available, Kapner can work with what's featured in L. Frank Baum's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, which is public domain. But he can't use any of the iconic creative additions from the original film - Dorothy's ruby slippers, for example - as Warner Bros. owns the 1939 film."
So far reviews have been mixed for the movie, but in the end, movie studios really only really care about making a profit. By all indications the film directed by Sam Raimi will be a box office success. However, is Disney jumping the gun with a sequel? The movie reportedly cost about $200 million to make, so even with an $80 million domestic box office weekend, there still is a ways to go.
"Alice in Wonderland" brought in $116 million its opening weekend in 2010, while other recent Disney movies such as "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters" and "Jack the Giant Slayer" disappointed at the box office.
