Ireland Baldwin loves her recent rescue pet and wants everyone to know it. In her new Adopt, Don't Shop holiday PSA for the Humane Society of the United States, the twenty-year-old model, complete with Santa cap and Christmas sweater, shows the affection one could give and receive by adopting a homeless animal.
Her dog, Kota, was living off the street before the animal advocate intervened. "I can't say no to someone that bites my hand and who looks like David Bowie," says the offspring of 30 Rock star Alec Baldwin, as she hugs and kisses her furry friend in her new ad.
Baldwin has been passionate about animal rights for most of her life. As she further explained in her PSA, "I've seen firsthand how dogs are treated in puppy mills. I've seen videos, I've gone on crazy expeditions with my mom. It's always been a very, very soft spot for me and something I'm very, very passionate about. ... We've rescued and saved all kinds of animals since I was a little girl."
Apparently even as a young girl, the daughter of Oscar winner Kim Basinger had ambitions to start her own sanctuary. "I even wanted to rescue the worms in my backyard," she added.
The young model asks fans to consider adopting a pet, as most pet store puppies come from puppy mills and apparently puppy millers pose online as local breeders. Puppy mills are known for their inhumane treatment, including commercially breeding dogs as they spend their entire lives in wire cages with little food, water or veterinary care. The animals are bred continuously and when they can no longer perform the function, they are discarded or euthanized.
According to the Humane Society's recent statistics, there are roughly 10,000 puppy mills in the U.S.
