Thursday night in Washington D.C, Hot Pursuit actress Reese Witherspoon hosted the Annual National Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony on the White House Ellipse. The 39-year-old Walk The Line Oscar winner joined President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama and their daughters Malia and Sasha. Also on hand for the festivities were musicians Crosby, Stills and Nash, Aloc Blacc, Kelsea Ballerini and Witherspoon's recent Muppets co-star, Miss Piggy.
On a serious note, President Obama took a moment to address the recent attack in Southern California by appealing to everyone to "Come together as brothers and sisters." He added, "This is of course the most wonderful time of the year, but we would be remiss not to take a moment to remember our fellow Americans whose hearts are heavy tonight; who grieve for loved ones; especially in San Bernardino. Their loss is our loss, too. We're all one American family." As a remembrance to the fourteen victims, the President ordered the U.S. flag flown at half-staff atop the White House.
In addition to hosting the event, Witherspoon may have also been doing research for an upcoming film. Variety recently reported that in an appearance on Fashionably Late With Rachel Zoe, the 39-year-old actress claimed she would love to bring back her Legally Blonde character, Elle Woods, for a third film in which she enters the world of politics. "I think we're ready to see Elle and what she's up to lately." said the Wild actress before adding, "I actually think it's kind of great right now because we're talking about women in politics and how important that is to get more women. And I think it'd be kind of a cool thing to have her be a Supreme Court justice or someone who runs for office."
Last night's ceremony closed with the President joining Santa Clause in a rendition of "Jingle Bells".
