According to the NY Post, the MTA was forced to throw out over a quarter-million dollars worth of new maps, after they were found to contain faulty information.

"They're very embarrassed about this," a transit source told the Post. "They were frantically calling the booths trying to get these maps back."

The maps contained a tiny but potentially disastrous error. The minimum price on a pay-per-ride card was listed as $4.50. The new minimum is $5.

Making the mishap even more embarrassing, the fee change was the sole reason that new maps were ordered to be printed.

They weren't coming out with a new map because they were changing the map. They were coming out with a new map because they were changing the price," said Paul Flores, an MTA station agent and union leader, to the NY Post. "That was the sole purpose. And they couldn't even get that right."

The NY Post reported that the Transit Workers Union Local 100 estimated that 80,000 bad maps were printed and subsequently trashed. The MTA says that only two boxes of the incorrect maps made it to commuters and the rest were pulled and destroyed before they got out. The mistake could cost up to $250,000.

An MTA spokesperson would not confirm this figure.

"The money they waste is mind-boggling," an unnamed station agent in Brooklyn told the Post.

.The new corrected maps won't be available until March 15.

They're very embarrassed about this," a transit source said. "They were frantically calling the booths trying to get these maps back."

What do you think? Is this an honest mistake or another example of the bumbling antics of the MTA?
